SIMONA THORPE: I want to be an instrument where
I can do something, where I can accomplish something,
whether for my family or for others.
And I want to continue as long as He lets me.
[LAUGHS]

I had osteoporosis.
But at the time, I didn't know how bad it was.
It was pretty advanced.
PAUL HONG: Simona has been a patient of mine
for several years now.
Her initial surgery was geared at stabilizing her neck
and taking care of what's called her stenosis, correcting
the compression on her spinal cord.
She did beautifully well from this and recovered well.
SIMONA THORPE: Well, I was getting out of bed.
And I straightened out.
And that's when I fell.
PAUL HONG: Unfortunately, life happens.
And she fell and broke her neck.
And she had requested that she be transferred
from the outside hospital that she was at so
that I could take care of her.
And she did very well.
The surgery part is always the easiest part.
It's just a few hours.
But it's really the recovery that matters the most.
It's making sure that the patient has appropriate wound
care, that the patient is appropriately rehabilitating
in terms of mobilizing, in terms of being
able to perform their activities of daily living.
SUZANNE MAGINOT: At Sutter Care at Home,
we provide a variety of home health services, everything
from nursing to all rehabilitative services.
I'm a part of that as a physical therapist.
We also have dietician, medical social workers, and even home
health aides that can come to the house.
SIMONA THORPE: How I felt with a team is like having
brothers and sisters at home.
There's someone to see after me.
PAUL HONG: And patients who do have
the option of being able to go home,
it really is much better for them.
And they have much better outcomes.
And so I think by having the resources
with Sutter Care at Home, that really helped
us to optimize her recovery.
SUZANNE MAGINOT: They're in familiar surroundings.
They're in their own bed, sleeping better, eating better,
moving around better.
There's more of a motivation to improve in the house.
SIMONA THORPE: Right now I can see with their help,
I advance a lot.
I advance a lot.
SUZANNE MAGINOT: We can recognize
things that are starting to go bad quickly
and get them the care in the home
so that they're not having to go back to the emergency room.
PAUL HONG: That personal touch, so to speak,
that differentiates, I think, our care.
And, ultimately, that added benefit benefits myself,
benefits us because it really raises our standard,
as well as it raises the confidence
that the patients have in us.
SUZANNE MAGINOT: I will see some of my patients out and about
sometimes at the grocery store, in church,
or at the soccer game watching their grandchild play soccer.
And they'll recognize me.
And I like the fact that I had something
to do with that person being able to get back
to enjoying their life.
SIMONA THORPE: I feel good, morally, spiritually,
physically feel good.
I think one of these days, I'll go back to dancing.
