Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease involving the central nervous system. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes us as a Comprehensive Partner in MS Care.

Why Choose Sutter?
Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be challenging, but remember — you’re not alone. MS affects more than 2.5 million people worldwide and is a leading cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. People with MS may experience a range of symptoms, from fatigue and vision problems to tingling sensations, muscle weakness, and challenges with balance and coordination.
At Sutter, we treat more than 1,000 people with MS every year. The treatment of MS is complex and requires a multi-disciplinary team approach, involving physicians from multiple disciplines. We’ve brought together specialists across fields — urology, ophthalmology, neuropsychology and rehabilitation — to provide you with comprehensive care. Along with treatment, we offer educational resources, support groups and opportunities to get involved in clinical research.

Specialty Program
If you've been diagnosed with MS or think you might have it, our neurologists in Sacramento and the Bay Area can help. Our multiple sclerosis clinics are recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for providing exceptional care.
There’s no specific test for MS, so getting a diagnosis is a process of eliminating all other possibilities. It’s important that you find a neurologist who has the expertise to make an accurate clinical diagnosis. Because we treat 1,000 people with MS a year, our specialists have the experience to accurately determine your condition. We’ll use your symptom history, neurological exam, and lab and imaging tests to make a diagnosis. We may also perform other specialized tests, such as a spinal tap, evoked potential tests or ocular coherence tomography.
Our teams of specialists work together to provide comprehensive care tailored to your needs. We offer:
- Effective treatments: From managing relapses to slowing disease progression
- Symptom relief: Addressing challenges like fatigue, pain, and cognitive difficulties
- Expert support: Access to a range of specialists, including neuropsychologists and rehabilitation experts
- Wellness guidance: Tips for managing stress, improving sleep, and staying active

Multiple Sclerosis Research
In addition to education and support groups, we offer cutting-edge MS research studies. Our team has been working on these studies for 20 years, helping to develop the treatments available today.
