Comprehensive Health Care for Dementia

If you or a loved one notice some cognitive issues, such as increasing forgetfulness, disorientation or confusion, or just general trouble getting thoughts out, SPMF brain health experts at CPMC’s Ray Dolby Brain Health Center (RDBHC) can help.

Through our innovative partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California, we offer comprehensive services for aging adults with cognitive issues.

  • Diagnostic testing with a thorough history and medication review can show what kind of brain health issues are occurring. Not everyone who has trouble remembering has Alzheimer’s disease. There are other types of dementia, and treatments for each can vary. There are also other medical issues that can cause dementia-like symptoms, such as mood and sleep disorders, some prescription medications or overuse of alcohol. Conditions such as vitamin B-12 deficiency and thyroid disorders can also contribute. Treating these conditions can improve cognitive function.
  • Treatments can slow the progression of symptoms in some types of dementia and may help control other symptoms, such as changes in sleep and mood. If cognitive issues are being caused by another medical issue, we can often treat that successfully, which may slow down cognitive decline or even reverse it.
  • Rehabilitation services such as physical therapy and occupational therapy can help a person maintain the skills to carry out daily activities for as long as possible, and maintain some independence.
  • Our educational and supportive services can help someone suffering from dementia and everyone in his or her family learn how to live with the disease, cope with the challenges and plan for the future.

A Team Committed to Your Complete Care

Your RDBHC team will consist of a neurologist, nurse practitioner, social worker, family care specialist, neuropsychologist and pharmacist consultants, all of whom are available to help support you and your family every step of the way. We’ll work with you and your family to create a customized plan that helps maintain independence and improve quality of life.

Our team of providers at RDBHC is committed to your complete care. We go beyond the diagnosis, providing ongoing support to our patients and their families. Learn more about how our Care Navigation Team can support you and your family with education, resources and support.

Alzheimer's Disease Research

Sutter Health Alzheimer's Disease Research
Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, eventually leaving the person without the ability to carry out the simplest tasks of daily living. Estimates vary, but experts suggest that as many as 5 million Americans age 65 and older have Alzheimer's disease. Research works on ways to improve diagnosis and care for Alzheimer’s disease patients, as well as focusing on a way to cure and possibly prevent it.
