Role Description
Hospital volunteers play a vital role in supporting patients and our staff by providing assistance with various tasks such as; escorting visitors, running errands for units, stocking supplies, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting patients. They can enhance the patients experience by providing meaningful company, addressing their needs, and creating a welcoming environment. Acceptance into the program is based on an application and interview process.
Requirements and Qualifications
Volunteers must possess the maturity, responsibility, and interpersonal skills to interact safely with patients, staff, and other volunteers in a complex organization. Volunteers must be able to see and hear well enough to communicate in person or on the telephone with ease. Volunteers should be able to speak English to be understood clearly. Volunteers need to have manual dexterity and be able to read to assist with paperwork and perform clerical tasks independently. Volunteers must have strength and stamina to be on their feet for the duration of shift and able to run errands for other areas in the hospital.
Minimum Requirements to be a Volunteer
- Volunteer must be at least 18 years of age.
- Volunteers must be able to commit to attending a minimum of one 2-4 hour shift per week, and a minimum of 100 hours of service.
Steps to Become a Volunteer
Attend informational session and complete application
Please follow the link at the top of the page to sign up for a mandatory 1-hour informational session. The session will cover volunteer opportunities at our facility, our requirements, and the link to apply.
Interview
After the prospective volunteer has submitted their online application, the applicant will be contacted within 1-3 weeks by a member of Volunteer Services for a phone interview. The objective of the interview is to speak further about the reasons for volunteering , discuss availability, and volunteer assignment. During this time the applicant will have the opportunity to ask any additional questions about the program and their needs. If accepted to the program onboarding takes 2-3 months to complete.
Complete onboarding
- Volunteer must complete criminal background check.
- Employee Health Clearance — Certain immunizations required. Please check our Health Clearance Requirements.
Attend in person Hospital Orientation
In-person Hospital Orientation is 4 hour long session. At this time Hospital and Volunteer program expectations, policy, and procedures will be reviewed.

No. This program is for volunteer experience only. For shadowing information please contact Sutter Medical Center Sacramento Human Resources Department.
This is a case-by-case basis depended on the content of the form. the volunteer department does offer letters verifying hours of service and role description only if the volunteer has meet program requirement of 100 hours of service.
Our program does allow summer break volunteers only if they apply to the program by mid-April (to allow plenty of time for onboarding) and are able to complete the 100 hour commitment.
Parking is free for volunteers.
Volunteers are typically only assigned to one space at a time.
Our program does offer accommodations for longer absences, volunteers can discuss their needs with the department.
Yes, annually during flu season all volunteers and employees are required to receive the flu shot/or decline and receive one negative TB screening. Please note these annual requirements are mandatory.
Yes, volunteers must attend a annual review of paperwork and procedures covered during in-person Hospital Orientation when initially onboarding to the program.
