Pig Dermis Sling Rejection

Medically Reviewed by

Question

Regarding stress incontinence and using the pig skin mesh sling option - is it possible for a patient to reject the sling?

Answer

While nearly anything is conceivable or possible in individual situations, it's my understanding that the pig dermis is treated to remove all cellular components, leaving just the natural, treated sterile collagen. It has been evaluated for safety by the FDA.

"Rejecting" a material refers to a specific immunologic process whereby your immune systen would attack and degrade something it considers foreign. This is not anticipated after a pig dermis sling. Instead, your immune system deposits scar tissue and fibrosis around the sling that improves the strength of the sling.
