Toenail Fungus Treatment

Medically Reviewed by

Question

I have a yellow discoloration on most of my toenails. I've tried a few over-the-counter creams, but they did not work. Any suggestions? What is your opinion of laser treatments for this problem?

Answer

Assuming that your toenails have a fungal infection, you have several options:

  1. Topical treatment
  2. Oral medication treatment
  3. Laser treatment
  4. Combination of the above treatments

Each has its pros and cons. Topical medication is only 5-8 percent successful, at best. Oral medication is 70-75 percent successful. Laser is approximately 70 percent successful.

My recommendation is that you see a board certified podiatrist who can discuss the treatment options that best fits you and your comfort level. Some of my patients prefer the laser treatment, some prefer the oral medication and some choose a combination of the above.
