About the Fellowship Program

Fellows will have the opportunity to gain skills in education, clinical or laboratory-based research as guided by their interests. Our location in the center of San Francisco provides opportunities for collaboration with other academic centers and in the biotechnology industry under the guidance of CPMC research faculty. Our primary site, California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC, Van Ness Campus), is one of the largest not-forprofit medical centers in California and the flagship hospital for the Sutter Health system, providing outstanding primary and specialty care to the ethnically and socioeconomically diverse San Francisco Bay Area community. CPMC serves a broad referral base of primary care physicians as the greater Northern California region and beyond for specialty services. Inpatient and outpatient palliative care services are integral to the care of our Hematology/Oncology patients as well as to the education of students, internal medicine residents and fellows.

CPMC has a longstanding Internal Medicine Residency program, which maintains a close relationship with the Hematology-Oncology department. These residents all have required rotations on the Hematology-Oncology inpatient service, where they would work closely with the Heme/Onc fellow; this collaboration will provide a rich opportunity to teach and mentor IM residents. CPMC also hosts subspecialty fellowship programs in Cardiology, Gastroenterology-Hepatology, Pulmonary-Critical Care, Endocrinology and Rheumatology.

Outpatient Hematology/Oncology care is provided at the CPMC Pacific campus, including Hematology and Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and some Radiology services. The CPMC Cancer Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Fellows will also rotate through the University of California, San Francisco Inpatient Adult Malignant Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant service, where they will gain concentrated experience in the inpatient management of patients with malignant hematologic diseases as well as the principles and management of cell-based therapy including peripheral blood and bone marrow transplantation and CAR-T cell therapy. Additionally, they will have the opportunity for an elective rotation in the Outpatient Malignant Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic and other subspecialty clinics.

This diverse and challenging environment is ideal for postgraduate training in hematology/ oncology, providing an excellent foundational experience in common diagnoses as well as exposure to rare diagnoses and complicated cases that require expert multidisciplinary management. Fellows will graduate with the confidence and unique skill set that can be applied to a broad variety of practice settings.
