Didactic Activities
Residents receive protected time from clinical responsibilities to attend psychiatry didactics as well as specialty-specific didactics while on internal medicine and emergency medicine rotations. During didactic time, residents will engage with other mental health professionals Sutter Sacramento-Valley-wide during monthly departmental Grand Rounds, participate in journal clubs, case conferences, and receive mentorship and psychotherapy supervision, in addition to traditional didactic lectures and workshops. Specific didactic afternoons will be designated for wellness and community service activities, encouraging self-care as well as caring for the community which we are privileged to serve.
Quality improvement, health equity, and physician wellness are core topics infused in all four years of residency and time is given for all classes to study together in preparation for the annual psychiatry in-training exam. Our faculty includes physicians dual-board certified in primary care specialties (family medicine, internal medicine) and psychiatry, ensuring that psychiatric residents receive psychiatric education that is balanced with medical knowledge essential to future work as a consultant or integrated care expert upon graduation. Particular emphasis is given to transitions between years, offering opportunity to begin orientation to the following year’s responsibility as the academic year ends.
Residents will receive education on health advocacy and will participate in advocacy days at the state Capitol, a unique opportunity for Sacramento-based residents!
