Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship
The Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship sponsored by the Orthopedic Trauma Surgeons of Northern California provides one year of advanced orthopedic trauma training. One fellow is selected annually for hands-on experience with complex cases.

From Competent to Confident: Where Residency Ends and Expertise Begins
The Orthopedic Trauma Surgeons of Northern California (OTSNC) Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship in partnership with SRMC offers a year of advanced training in musculoskeletal injuries of the extremities and pelvis. With a focus on a balanced approach of progressive autonomy and mentorship, one fellow is selected annually to work with trauma fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in a broad spectrum of cases, ranging from complex high-energy polytrauma to chronic malunion deformities
The fellowship is intended to advance the fellow's knowledge, skills, and clinical acumen well beyond what a traditional orthopaedic residency achieves, serving as the keystone of the fellow's orthopaedic education. Residency builds foundational knowledge, but the judgment to apply it effectively in practice comes only with time and experience; a one-year fellowship in our program is designed to compress several years of that experience into one. Ultimately, the program prepares the fellow to enter orthopaedic trauma practice fully capable of delivering excellent patient care and building a successful practice.
Training occurs at two Level-2 trauma centers in the Sacramento area. Fellows will spend the majority of the time operating in the OR, one-on-one with the attending. Other duties include seeing post-ops in the trauma clinic, running fracture conference, and working on research.

Message From the Director
"The OTSNC fellowship shall be an advanced experience in musculoskeletal trauma which will enable the graduate to offer injured patients the highest level of orthopaedic care and to provide their community with leadership in the field of orthopaedic trauma.”

Broad Surgical Exposure
There is opportunity to operate with arthroplasty, hand, and plastic surgery colleagues, gaining exposure to techniques and perspectives outside a traditional trauma scope. This cross-disciplinary experience builds a more complete surgical skill set, from periprosthetic fracture management to soft tissue coverage and complex hand injuries.

Judgment Over Trend-Chasing
The program trains fellows to critically evaluate new surgical techniques and technology rather than adopt them simply because they're new. Fellows learn to distinguish which innovations are backed by real clinical evidence and which won't stand the test of time.
