Howard J. Lee, M.D.

Dr. Lee strives to provide patients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their medical care. He believes in approaching patients not just as medical cases, but as people with their own unique needs, goals and values.

Outside of work, Lee spends most of his time with his family. A native of Spokane, Washington, he loves outdoor activities, particularly playing soccer, bicycling and running. When he has the chance to travel to a new city, he always tries to visit any local aquariums.

Dr. Howard J. Lee is a hematologist-oncologist who cares for patients with a range of cancers and hematologic disorders. Before joining the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, he was an attending physician at UCSF with a focus on cancers of the breast, lung, and genitourinary system. Dr. Lee’s research focused on patient quality of life during cancer treatment, doctor-patient communication, and the care of older adults with cancer. His work has been recognized with an American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Merit Award and a grant from the National Institute on Aging.

Lee earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, followed by a fellowship in hematology-oncology at UCSF, where he served as chief fellow and was recognized for his commitment to humanistic patient care.
