Kimberly M. Dalal, M.D.

Dr. Kimberly Dalal is a surgical oncologist and board-certified general surgeon with extensive clinical experience and research interests in pancreatic, hepatobiliary, and upper gastrointestinal cancers (esophagus and stomach), as well as soft tissue sarcoma and melanoma. At the Dorothy E. Schneider Cancer Center and at CPMC, she works closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, and pathologists. Together, they individualize each patient’s diagnostic work-up and treatment plan through the Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Tumor Board, with a strong emphasis on patient participation in clinical trials.

With an expert surgical team, she performs complex open operations such as pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure), major hepatectomy, esophagectomy, gastrectomy, and soft tissue sarcoma resections of the retroperitoneum, trunk, and extremities, with the goal of achieving cure whenever possible. When appropriate, she utilizes robotic surgery to minimize incisions and reduce postoperative pain.

She is also committed to improving patients’ quality of life and offers palliative surgical procedures for individuals with metastatic disease. Her research has focused on molecular approaches to guide the surgical management of cancer.

She has published in leading journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Surgery, and Annals of Surgical Oncology, and has lectured nationally and internationally. Her honors include the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Clinical Research and multiple ASCO Merit Awards. She previously served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, where she was Chief of Surgical Oncology at David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center and was deployed to Afghanistan.
