Nihar U. Shah, M.D.

Dr. Shah's philosophy of care is to provide patient-centered, compassionate, evidence-based digestive and liver health care that respects each patient's unique goals and concerns. He believes in listening first, thorough evaluation, and partnering with patients through shared decision-making to identify the root cause of symptoms and develop personalized treatment plans that address both immediate symptoms and long-term digestive health, through prevention, education, and the latest advances in gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

Currently, Dr. Shah volunteers his professional expertise to serve the community through Operation Access.

Previously, he has been involved with the National Pulse Polio Program by WHO; school health services; the Maternal & Child Health program; Health, Environment, and Action in Louisville (HEAL); and provided education about the current HCV treatment landscape to visiting Egyptian scholars.

Dr. Shah enjoys traveling, swimming, hiking, exploring new places, and watching movies.

Dr. Shah received his medical degree from Mumbai, India, in 2007 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, New York. Prior to completing his Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Louisville, he pursued sub-specialty training and completed a prestigious hepatology fellowship at the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He has served as faculty and has clinical experience in various healthcare settings, including academic institutions, Veterans Affairs community hospitals, and tertiary care centers. He has extensive experience in liver disease clinical trials, with several peer-reviewed publications and posters. He has also served as a member of liver transplant programs.
