Cost Estimates and Standard Charges in Acute Care Settings

Healthcare cost transparency is important to help consumers make informed decisions about their care.

We post a list of standard charges for each hospital annually on our website and provide access to a cost estimator tool for more than 200 frequently used medical services provided by Sutter physician organizations and more than 300 services provided in Sutter hospitals.

While Sutter’s Cost Estimator Tool can provide patient out-of-pocket estimates on a number of services, we also encourage consumers with health insurance to communicate with their insurance provider to better understand potential out-of-pocket costs when making care decisions.

As of January 1, 2021, Sutter is providing information under the new CMS Transparency rule as set forth by regulation, including: a cost estimator tool for 300 services provided in Sutter hospitals; and a comprehensive machine-readable file of all services, including the discounted cash prices and negotiated rates. Please note the data in the hospital list of standard charges does not reflect out-of-pocket costs for insured patients. The chargemaster also does not reflect all of the discounts for which uninsured patients may be eligible.

Per the federal requirement, Sutter includes the 300 hospital services identified by the federally required CMS Price Transparency Rule through its Cost Estimator Tool.

• The Medi-Cal payer-specific charges do not reflect adjustments for services provided in an emergency room or for pediatric services.
