Ask your healthcare provider about getting an annual lung cancer screening if you fit all these criteria:

• Age 50 to 80
• Current smoker or quit in the past 15 years
• Smoked a pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years

Lung nodules detected on a screening aren’t usually cancerous, but it’s important to monitor them.

A recent National Cancer Institute study gave annual low-dose CT scans to people between the ages of 55–74 who had a heavy smoking history but were otherwise symptom-free. They found that the low-dose CT scans improved mortality from lung cancer by 20% compared to screenings with annual chest X-rays.
