Clinical Experiences
General Endocrine Clinic
Fellows have two continuity clinic sessions per week, on Tuesday morning and Thursday morning. The fellows have their own schedules and emphasis is placed on continuity of care. In the continuity clinic, the fellows see patients with a variety of endocrine disorders, including thyroid disease, adrenal disease, osteoporosis, pituitary disorders, PCOS and diabetes mellitus. For more information, visit endocrinology services.
Diabetes Clinic

Fellows participate in the Diabetes Clinic at CPMC’s Center for Diabetes Services every Monday. The Center for Diabetes Services is a recognized education program by the American Diabetes Association. The multidisciplinary team at the Diabetes Clinic includes Registered Nurses and Registered Dieticians, working together to provide comprehensive diabetes care, education, nutritional advice, and support in a friendly atmosphere. In addition to the variety of diabetes and clinical services, the center offers self-management educational programs and research opportunities. For more information about the CPMC Diabetes Center, visit diabetes services.
FNA Biopsy and Ultrasound Clinic

Fellows will learn to perform formal neck ultrasounds in order to visualize overall thyroid gland morphology, thyroid nodules, parathyroid glands/suspected adenomas, and neck lymph nodes. They will apply this skill to evaluate palpable neck lumps, to provide follow up imaging after thyroid nodule FNA biopsy, and for thyroid cancer surveillance.
Fellows will also learn to perform fine needle aspiration of thyroid nodules and suspected parathyroid adenomas, as well as suspicious lymph nodes in patients with a prior history of thyroid cancer. Fellows will gain hands on experience preparing specimens using both air dried and alcohol-fixed slides for standard cytologic examination, as well as for molecular analysis when indicated. Three to four FNA biopsies are typically performed during each half day clinic on Friday mornings.
Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic
Fellows see patients in Bone Clinic throughout their two years of fellowship, every other Thursday morning.
Fellows will see patients with osteoporosis, calcium disorders and parathyroid disease, among other bone and calcium-related conditions. They will learn to interpret bone mineral density scans and assess fracture risk.
Weight Management Clinic
All fellows rotate in the Weight Management Clinic the first Wednesday each month. For more information: Weight Management Clinic.
Other Outpatient Clinic experiences
First year fellows rotate with our Diabetes and Pregnancy Program as well as the Reproductive Endocrine Clinic.
Second year fellows have scheduled clinic sessions with Pediatric Endocrinologists in our Pediatric Endocrine Clinic. For more information about the Pediatric Endocrine clinic at CPMC, visit pediatric endocrinology service.
Inpatient Endocrine Consult Service
Both first and second year fellows cover the inpatient consultation service. Educational bedside rounds with an attending physician take place several times a week. Fellows do In Person Endocrine Consultations at the main hospital at 1101 Van Ness and Telehealth Consultations at the Davies campus and Mission Bernal Campus.
Schedule at a glance
The first and second year endocrine fellows alternate being on the inpatient and outpatient service monthly. During the outpatient rotation, the fellows have all weekends off. During the inpatient rotation, the fellows take call for outpatient and inpatient questions during the week and every other weekend. With this schedule the fellows have historically been on call 2-3 weekends every 2 months. We are currently approved for 4 fellows and will be expanding our program to 4 fellows over the next 2 years. This will reduce the number of weeks of inpatient call.
