California Pacific Medical Center
Internal Medicine Residency
Prepare for an elite career in primary care, hospital-based practices or subspecialty training programs at one of the nation’s largest quaternary referral centers.

The Academic Community Hospital Advantage
As an academic affiliate of Dartmouth Medical School and the University of California, San Francisco, our program provides a rigorous and balanced approach to internal medicine. In both our preliminary (one-year) and categorical resident (three-year) programs, you’ll train to become a skilled, compassionate physician in an environment that fosters your individual growth and talents.
Your intensive internal medicine practice will emphasize a high level of patient care and responsibility in ambulatory clinics, cardiology, intensive care units and beyond. As you learn, you’ll be mentored and supported by a team known for consistently delivering exceptional, personalized care at one of California’s top hospitals.

Maggie J. So, M.D., FACP – Program DirectorOur residents cherish the collaborative medical community that develops them into outstanding clinicians while promoting wellness, academic rigor and collegiality.

Balanced Clinical Experiences
Categorical interns and residents balance time spent in inpatient and outpatient care settings, including Internal Medicine, Cardiology, ICU, night rotations and Ambulatory Primary Care. Without continuity clinic duties, preliminary interns spend more time learning clinical skills in the hospital and exploring their interests in elective rotations.

Didactics
Learn, teach and lead in didactic activities, including Core Curriculum topics, Ambulatory Morning report presentations and discussions, weekly time to reflect and debrief difficult situations in small groups, Evidence-Based Medicine sessions and Pre-Clinic Talks on core ambulatory topics.

Diverse Patient Population
Our location draws a population of patients that are diverse culturally, socioeconomically and in the complexity of their cases, from common ailments and injuries to unique diseases.

A Path to Elite Fellowships
Residents here have a strong history of acceptance into competitive fellowships in specialties including Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Oncology, Pulmonary Critical Care, Infectious Disease, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Geriatrics and Allergy/Immunology.

Simulation Training
With our state-of-the-art simulation mannequin (SimMan 3G), you’ll manage a variety of acute care scenarios in conjunction with the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care.
Quaternary Care Center
As one of California’s largest quaternary referral centers, we accept critical patients from across Northern California for subspecialty care and treatment.
Addressing Healthcare Disparities
We have a resident focused curriculum that looks at the social determinants of health and the disparities that happen in healthcare in the communities that we serve.
Vibrant Research Community
Perform research aligned with your career goals under the guidance of assigned faculty mentors with statistical and IRB support. Present your findings during regularly scheduled conferences, our annual Research Day, in industry publications and with financial backing for national and international society meetings.
