California Pacific Medical Foundation
Shoulder & Upper Extremity Fellowship
The CPMC Shoulder & Upper Extremity Fellowship offers a year of advanced training in shoulder, elbow, and hand reconstruction. Two fellows are selected annually to work with leading physicians, focusing on complex upper extremity conditions.

Become a Leader in Shoulder and Upper Extremity Surgery
As a fellow, you’ll receive advanced shoulder and elbow surgery training as you diagnose and treat complex upper extremity conditions in a highly specialized setting, where tertiary reconstructions and revision surgeries are the cornerstone of care. Work directly with expert physicians to diagnose, treat and manage over 450 cases, including shoulder arthroplasties, arthroscopy, fracture care, tendon reconstructions and elbow operations.
Training occurs in state-of-the-art facilities within California Pacific Medical Center’s Mission Bernal campus, Van Ness campus and the Presidio Surgery Center. You’ll be in the OR four days a week, with an additional day dedicated to clinic work and research. With this flexible schedule, you can tailor your experience to fit your professional goals.

Expert Mentorship
Work under the guidance of top physicians and partners at California Pacific Orthopaedics, the most extensive private orthopedic practice in San Francisco. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with additional shoulder, elbow and sports medicine specialists.

Tailored Clinical Training
Train in the operating rooms at CPMC, where you’ll handle advanced surgical cases ranging from complex reconstructions to minimally invasive procedures. Whether you’re performing joint replacements or managing fracture care, you’ll work one-on-one with an attending physician to develop technical proficiency and confidence in your clinical decisions.

In-Depth Learning
Journal clubs and conferences supplement your clinical experience and allow you to work with the regional shoulder and elbow healthcare community. Attend local and national industry-sponsored meetings, with opportunities to learn and teach among private practice surgeons, members of UCSF and Kaiser and the team orthopedic surgeon of the Oakland A’s.
Research Opportunities
Work on several ongoing projects and submit at least one research paper to a peer-reviewed journal. Basic science research is supported by grant funding, industry partners and university collaborations.
