Research and Scholarship
We believe that research and scholarship are integral to providing relevant and evidence-based medicine. We are committed to partnering with, enabling, and mentoring our resident and fellow physicians to achieve success in their scholarly endeavors.
Sutter Health Research Symposium and GME Research Days
In addition to presenting at external conferences, residents and fellows can showcase their work at one of two regional GME Research Days, which occur in the spring and bring together multiple residencies and fellowships. The Sutter Health Research Institute also hosts a yearly Research Symposium to which residents and fellows can also submit their work. Learn more about research at Sutter Health here.
Office of Academic Support
The Office of Academic Support (OAS) is a dedicated department wholly committed to supporting scholarly activity across Sutter Health’s residency and fellowship programs. OAS is made up of coordinators, statisticians, data engineers, and research scientists who partner directly with residents and fellows on projects. See below some of the resources available to residents and fellows through OAS.
Educational Resources
We offer a monthly virtual seminar series on research and scholarly topics during the academic year (August-May). Topics include:
- Writing a strong case report
- Formulating an effective research question and data analysis plan
- How to critically read a research paper
- Statistical analysis basics
- Qualitative research
- IRB and privacy for research and quality improvement
- Understanding predictive modeling: training, performance, and application
Project Partnership
OAS provides comprehensive project partnership, including:
- Mentoring for project design and execution
- Mentoring for research electives
- Statistical analysis
- Data extraction from the electronic health record
- Journal submission guidance/editing
- Publication fee coverage
- Administrative support with
- IRB submission
- Legal and privacy approvals if necessary
- Any other study start-up or ongoing needs
- Connection to research opportunities/mentors
