Congratulations on your growing family! We’re excited to support you as you prepare to welcome your new baby. At the Sutter Medical Center Birth Center in Sacramento, you’ll find warm, private rooms designed to help you feel comfortable throughout labor and delivery.
You’ll be cared for by a maternity team that includes nurse lactation consultants, maternal-fetal medicine doctors, genetic specialists and dedicated OB physicians and nurses. We’re also home to one of the region’s largest Level IV neonatal intensive care units (NICU), offering 24-hour care from board certified neonatologists and a skilled transfer team.

With more than 75 pediatric subspecialties, a specialized cardiac ICU and a dedicated NICU transport team, we serve as a referral center for even the most complex cases. As Northern California’s largest Level IV NICU, we support high-risk pregnancies and care for vulnerable newborns. Known as Sacramento’s baby hospital, we welcome around 6,000 babies each year and provide care for more than 30,000 children in our pediatric emergency department.

Visitor Hours and Information
Family and visitors are encouraged to visit between the hours of 7:00 am –12:00 pm and 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
Parking
You can park in Lot B between L and Capitol streets on 29th Street.
- Take the parking lot stairs or elevator to Level 3 and cross the bridge to the Women's and Children's Center.
- Enter the building and walk around the gift shop to find the green women's elevator portal.
- Take the elevator to Level 6 and check in at the Labor and Delivery registration desk.
Valet parking is available if you require special assistance. The entrance is on Capitol Avenue between 28th and 29th streets.

You can book a tour of the birth center and sign up for classes online.
Come in when contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute each, for 1 hour.
Come sooner if you experience any of these:

- You feel something isn’t right

You’ll go to triage first so we can check you and your baby.
We will:

- Examine your cervix if needed
- Decide whether you’re in active labor
If you’re ready to deliver, you’ll move to a birth room. If not, we’ll give guidance on next steps.
Yes. Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, is home to Northern California’s largest Level IV neonatal intensive care unit. Our neonatal specialists provide the highest level of care for premature, fragile and critically ill infants.
We’ll review your birth plan when you arrive and support your preferences when safe.
If medical needs change, we’ll explain why and decide next steps with you. You can also create your preferences at the hospital if you don’t have a written plan. For help creating your plan, you can use American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologist’s sample birth plan template.
We keep you informed, ask permission before procedures and include you in decisions.
Your obstetrician, midwife and nurses at SMCS work together so your care stays consistent. We support comfort measures, your support person and your preferences whenever medically safe.
Yes. Your support person can usually stay during labor, birth and recovery. They can help with comfort, communication and bonding after delivery.
After delivery you’ll receive:

- Education on recovery and newborn care
- Follow-up care guidance
- Access to ongoing services at Sutter
We also provide resources for postpartum mood concerns and physical recovery, including a virtual Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program.
