Troy E. Sterling, M.D.

Serious illness affects every aspect of life, and Troy E. Sterling, M.D. helps patients live as fully and comfortably as possible while navigating the challenges that come with complex medical conditions. He cares for patients with cancer, advanced heart and lung disease, neurologic illnesses, and other serious health conditions, focusing on symptom management, quality of life, and care that reflects each person's values and goals. Palliative care can be provided at any stage of serious illness and alongside treatments intended to control or cure disease, offering an extra layer of support for patients and their families.

He believes the most important part of medicine is listening. Every patient has a unique story, and he strives to build trusting relationships where patients and their families feel heard, supported, and empowered. Together, they work through difficult decisions and create care plans that honor what matters most to them.

Dr. Sterling is particularly passionate about mental health and emotional wellness in the setting of serious illness. Whether helping someone cope with a new diagnosis, manage anxiety related to their condition, or navigate major life transitions, he takes a whole-person approach that supports physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being with dignity and compassion.

He is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Sterling loves spending time with his wife and five cats, including two new strays that found their way to the family right after they moved to Modesto. He also enjoys working outside in the garden, watching Survivor and Top Chef, and playing board games with friends and family.
