Innovation is in our DNA. At Sutter, we’re constantly asking and answering the most pressing clinical questions to elevate your care. From studies that test new surgical approaches to clinical trials on targeted cancer drugs, we’re leveraging science to develop better treatments and improve healthcare delivery.
For over a century, Sutter has led cutting-edge research and brought better care to more people when and where they need it. Every day, our researchers discover breakthroughs that advance medical knowledge and create tomorrow’s best practices.
Historic Firsts
Better care begins here. Research across our institutes addresses urgent health needs and provides new, essential treatments. Sutter research has created novel medications, technology and procedures, including:
- The earliest-generation artificial heart valve to treat common forms of heart disease
- The first procedure testing a heart transplant
- The first use of lasers in eye disease and skin treatment
- The first heart-lung machine
- The first robot-assisted hip replacement surgery on a human patient
- A targeted, immunotherapy drug for melanoma, later approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for other types of cancer
- The first approved injectable treatment for HIV prevention
- A Mobile Stroke Unit for specialized stroke care “on wheels,” with on-site research opportunities
Pioneering Minimally Invasive Heart Procedures
Get safer treatment for heart conditions. Sutter’s cardiovascular teams are researching safer, more effective alternatives to open heart surgery. Through their work in PARTNER 3, an international clinical trial, Sutter researchers showed TAVR is the gold standard treatment for aortic stenosis. These findings will help speed recovery and save more lives.
Leading Early Cancer Detection
Protect your health with early cancer screenings. Sutter Health sites across Northern California are participating in PATHFINDER 2, a clinical study of the Galleri® blood test that could aid early detection for multiple cancers with a single blood draw. If safe and effective, the test will be able to pinpoint cancer signals before you experience symptoms.
Improving Treatment for Advanced Cancers
Get new hope with late-stage cancer care. Sutter is enrolling patients to the Targeted Agent and Profiling Utilization (TAPUR™) study , the first clinical trial conducted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This national clinical trial will determine the safety and efficacy of approved, targeted anticancer drugs.
