The moment you meet your baby happens only once, so you want a place dedicated to extraordinary care. At CPMC, we welcome you and your family to define your birthing experience.
Our labor-delivery-recovery rooms provide a homelike, private atmosphere. When needed, enternal and external fetal monitoring detect and trace the baby’s heart rate and your contractions. If you opt for a form of natural childbirth, our staff is there to offer coaching and comfort. Should you decide you want something more for pain, our obstetrical anesthesiologists are available on-site, 24 hours a day.
CPMC’s family-focused birth centers have earned honors including:
- Recognition as an Honor Roll Hospital by the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative.
- Joint Commission Gold Seals of Approval.
- Lower than state and national averages for elective deliveries according to the independent Leapfrog Group and the Department of Health and Human Services Hospital Compare.
- Better than target averages for maternal care according to Leapfrog Group measures.
Mission Bernal Campus Labor and Delivery
The Midwifery Program at Mission Bernal Campus is an integral part of our Women and Children’s Services. Our team of certified nurse-midwives and Ob-Gyns are committed to providing culturally sensitive, quality care during pregnancy and childbirth.
Each year, approximately 1,000 babies will be born at Mission Bernal. We are proud of our close-knit labor and delivery teams’ cooperative relationship, which is reflected in our low cesarean birth and episiotomy rates.
Mission Bernal also offers an on-site Special Care Nursery and immediate transport to our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the California Campus if needed, as well as an in-house pediatric hospitalist available 24/7 to respond to emergencies. The Level III NICU will be located at our new Van Ness Campus after March 2, 2019.
Mission Bernal offers breastfeeding support and bedside assistance from an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Our nurses and nurse-midwives provide breastfeeding education and can address common problems and concerns. After you leave the hospital, ongoing lactation support is available by center visit, telephone or by scheduling a private lactation appointment at Newborn Connections.
To meet our expert team of certified nurse-midwives and doctors, to learn more about our services and natural childbirth philosophy, and to tour our birthing center, register online for a New Patient Open House.
Van Ness Campus Labor and Delivery
On March 3, 2019 our renowned Women and Children's Center moves from the old California Campus to our new Van Ness Campus. Labor and delivery care will be provided by the same team San Francisco moms have come to know and trust.
The Van Ness Campus offers family-centered childbirth care, private rooms with views, state-of-the art technology and private Level III NICU rooms for newborns who need specialized medical care.
No matter what time of day or night, our staff and doctors are available to consult and help you. We’re here for you after the birth, too. Offering one of the most comprehensive, professionally staffed lactation consult programs in Northern California, Newborn Connections advises new mothers on the most effective techniques for successful breastfeeding.
