Position Requirements

The internship is a full time one year position beginning in August. Applicants must be enrolled in an APA-accredited doctoral program in psychology. Applicants must have completed all coursework, practicum training, and comprehensive exams prior to the start of the internship year. The Sutter Center for Psychiatry internship training program meets the licensure requirements for the state of California including all required supervised hours, adherence to supervised experience laws and regulations, and appropriate documentation of hours. Interns are required to complete 1500 hours of doctoral training in order to be licensed in the state of California, however 2000 hours is the expectation during the training year at SCP.

Preferred Qualifications

While all applicants who meet the above requirements will be considered, the below qualities are preferred

  • Strong interest in working with individuals with acute mental health needs
  • Knowledge and experience with third wave cognitive behavioral therapy interventions (Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, etc.)
  • Experience facilitating both process and education based group therapy
  • Ability to provide psychological services in a high stress environment
  • Experience providing psychological testing and assessment, including strong written communication skills
  • Experience working with a diverse population
  • Professional behavior within a work setting
  • Strong letters of recommendation from program faculty and practicum supervisors
  • High academic achievement as reflected within graduate school transcripts

APPIC Match

SCP will be participating in the APPIC Match and our APPIC member number as part of the California Psychology Internship Consortium is 1119. We adhere to all APPIC policies regarding the intern application and selection process. At no time will we solicit or provide any ranking-related information. Internship positions that remain unfilled after Phase I will be offered in the APPIC Phase II Match.

Application and Interview Procedure

Sutter Center for Psychiatry participates in the APPIC Match. In order to apply, you must submit an AAPI online application via appic.org. We are part of the California Psychology Internship Program (CPIC), as such you can find us on the APPIC site by searching for the consortium or by our APPIC member number: 1119. As part of your APPI we request that you include a cover letter stating which track you are interested in and how your goals and experience match with the opportunities provided at Sutter Center for Psychiatry.

The selection process for our internship program involves an initial screening of applicant’s using the provided APPI application. Applicants are screened on the basis of experience, interests, and references submitted in the application. Those who are assessed to hold goals and experience most closely matching the availability of training options at Sutter Center for Psychiatry, will be asked to participate in an in-person interview during the month of January.

The notification of interview status will occur via email or phone. If you have not received our notification of status by the notification date identified by APPIC, please contact us via email, so that we can clarify your status.
