The educational opportunities and requirements for Alta Bates Summit Medical Center - Internal Medicine residents include conferences, lectures, journal clubs, M&M conferences, grand rounds and more. Our didactic activities are essential for the training and development of safe, competent physicians.

  • Subspecialty Lectures: These lectures cover internal medicine specialties.  These lectures will prepare residents with the foundational knowledge needed for internal medicine.
  • Clinical Case Conferences: Residents present a clinical case and discuss their management with guidance from a faculty member. Remove “from errors” from the second sentence.
  • Journal Club: Residents will present a recent scholarly article and guide a larger discussion between fellow residents and faculty.
  • Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conferences: Over the three years of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, M&M Conferences are an opportunity for residents to thoroughly analyze and present one of their cases to ultimately improve system processes.
  • System-wide Grand Rounds: Residents will participate in grand rounds to discuss patient cases with peers and faculty members.
  • Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Committee: Residents become part of the committee and are actively involved with identifying feedback and resolutions on “near misses,” adverse events and serious adverse events.
  • Professionalism Conferences: These conferences will help to deepen residents’ and faculty members’ understanding of the program’s professionalism expectations and past situations in which there were breaches in professionalism.
  • Wellness Conferences: Residents and faculty will be engaged to learn about fatigue mitigation processes and stress management tools. One of our goals at ABSMC to ensure all individuals maintain a high level of well-being.
