Message from our Chief Residents

Welcome to Sutter Health Family Medicine & Rural Training Program. Thank you for considering our residency program!

We have so many passionate faculty, adjunct faculty and volunteer teachers that truly get to know us and help shape us into the best physicians for our future patients. Because we are unopposed, we are the only residency in our hospitals, giving us the opportunity to be directly involved in all our patients’ care and work side by side with specialists. Beyond the residency experience, Amador, Sacramento and Davis have been great cities to live in with plenty of outdoor activities, a thriving food scene and a wide range of entertainment (sports, art, music, etc).

From our Residents, Faculty and Graduates

Haylee Bettencourt, M.D.

"A common phrase you may hear from Sutter residents is that this program is a hidden gem. I wholeheartedly agree and am so thankful to have landed here. I think the culture of our program is what really sets us apart- this is the most driven, empathetic and encouraging group of people I have been around. Residency is hard enough as it is, but having all the support from faculty and co-residents has made this process bearable and even rewarding. I have found true mentorship here from faculty and true friendship with colleagues who I hope to continue consulting as I grow as a physician. I can't wait to start working in the Central Valley to deliver the care that I learned throughout this residency program."

Emerald Nguyen, M.D.

“I can only say great things about Sutter FMRP! We residents truly get to practice full spectrum family medicine, including training in abortion care, vasectomies, Botox injections, medical aid-in-dying, and Gender Affirming Care. Whatever your interest is, you’ll likely find it is already being done or can easily find faculty that is happy to make it happen for you. Our faculty all have particular interests and are committed to our learning, some of whom are making change at the state and national level."

Jennifer Daza, M.D.

I feel very well supported by the FMRP faculty and staff, and have loved my time here. As a Latina physician, I have a large Spanish-speaking patient panel which has been a dream come true! This is reason why I went into medicine and I’m so thankful for the training I’ve received thus far."

Shreya Chandrashekhar, D.O.

“From my first interview with Sutter FMRP I was struck by the approachability and warmth I felt amongst residents and faculty, and that has continued throughout my time in residency! I am inspired by the breadth of family medicine I have seen within our program- from HIV care, to medical aid in dying, to gender affirming care, to advanced obstetrics..the list goes on and on. I am trying to soak up as much as I can and feel grateful to train in a supportive environment with people who care about me personally and my professional goals. I have appreciated the diverse training I’ve received in the Davis track, where I received robust training my intern year at a large tertiary care center such as Sutter Sacramento to my 2nd and 3rd years which have taught me to adapt to the challenges and appreciate the joys of working at a smaller community hospital. I have so much gratitude for the supportive teaching I have received and for the opportunity to learn amongst good people.”

Arely Macias, M.D.

“Throughout my medical training, I have felt an unwavering attraction to the challenges and experiences inherent in the realm of family medicine, from pediatrics to geriatrics and everything in between, especially Women's Health and Obstetrics. Fortunately for me, Sutter FMRP encompasses similar passions, and from the beginning of this journey called residency, the excitement and learning has never stopped.

One of my favorite moments so far was being given the opportunity to be a pioneer for the new rural track in Amador County, alongside my co-resident Dr. Ganta. This endeavor started out with the goal to aide in bridging the gap between healthcare resources and underserved populations, little did we know we would become integral members of the community we serve. The experience has been filled with support from the staff, our Attendings, and the community, who received us with open arms. Working in Amador has solidified my belief in the profound impact family medicine can have on local communities.

I am fortunate to be part of Sutter FMRP, who focuses on nurturing resident growth, by empowering each one of us to find our own passions within medicine and supporting us every step of the way.“

Savannah Schewe, M.D.

"I did a 4th year medical school rotation at Sutter, and I knew then that it was a special program and I have never looked back.  We have ‘movers and shakers’ amongst our faculty who do amazing work with Health Equity, transgender care, reproductive health, HIV and medical aid in dying and it is inspiring to see.  I have been soaking up as much as I can from them.  They also make the workplace really fun. We have lots of opportunities for procedures and there’s a wide breadth of ages, backgrounds, and chief complaints within our clinic patients."

Class of 2023

Thomas Huey, M.D.

"Our program truly caters to the breadth of medicine from HIV treatment to Medical Aid in Dying and allows us to grow into the family physicians that we aspire to become. As part of the Davis track, I feel like I am able to experience both the robust training of a tertiary care center in Sacramento as well as the complexities and idiosyncrasies of a small community hospital in Davis. I am grateful to train among faculty and peers who are loving and kind and look forward to passing on the empathy and knowledge I have accumulated to future classes so that they may continue our tradition.”

Class of 2023

Kao Houa Vang M.D.

"Everyone at Sutter FMRP is very supportive of the type of competent family medicine physician I strive to become."

Class of 2025

Shreya Chandrashekhar D.O.

“This program is a hidden gem! I chose Sutter because on my interview day, I felt instantly at ease amongst the faculty/residents. The Davis track is the best of both worlds for me:  robust inpatient training my first year in urban Sacramento, and the rest of my training/continuity clinic in Davis, which has a small community feel. I was pleasantly surprised by the genuine commitment to resident wellbeing with dedicated time for resident gatherings, retreats, night float "parties", and adherence to duty hour restrictions.”

Class of 2024

Tiffany Chen, M.D.

“Sutter FMRP helped me learn to think broadly, work with an interprofessional team, and gave me the confidence to work in any outpatient clinic. The program also taught me the importance of fostering a supportive work environment and work family, a family that I already dearly miss!”

Class of 2022

Taylor Duke, M.D.

“After med school in Chicago, I wanted a change of scenery and warmer weather for my full-spectrum Family Medicine training. I got that and much more here at Sutter FMRP. I was surrounded by excellent physicians and a fun and welcoming workplace. Not only did I learn the essentials of Family Medicine, I also was trained in transgender care, reproductive health, and medical aid in dying, all within an incredibly supportive training environment.”

Class of 2022

Elyza Genilo, D.O.

“As a Sacramento native, I was delighted to have the opportunity to train close to home and raise a family here. As a standalone program, we are able to explore all our interests without hesitation, and we can tailor the curriculum to fit our educational needs. We have a diverse patient panel, as well as diverse faculty and staff that support us 100%. We get along fabulously, and I couldn't imagine getting through training without the support of my co-residents. Without a doubt, Sutter FMRP is a hidden gem!”

Class of 2022

Alexandra Mullen, M.D.

"Completing residency training with Sutter was all I could've hoped for! This program truly makes you into a well-rounded family doc. Whether your passion is preventive care, HIV treatment, gender health, addiction medicine, procedures, or a little bit of everything, you can find it here. With supportive faculty and ample electives, you can make your training your own. As part of the Davis track, I was a part of a unique community, with the benefits of training in Sacramento's large tertiary care center.”

Class of 2022

David Lin, M.D.

"I love working with wonderful physicians and staff who want to learn and take great care of patients."

Adjunct Faculty

Jessica Fortin, M.D.

"Our faculty are great physicians and just cool people — plus, being able to do C-sections with our core FM/OB trained faculty is a unique benefit."

Class of 2021

Xaunna Krehn M.D.

"It's clear that they care about resident wellness, not only in terms of work/life balance, but also in the passion they show in cultivating our professional interests. The faculty/staff are extremely responsive to feedback, and the overall culture of the program is super supportive."

Class of 2020

Salla Hennessy, M.D.

“Sutter FMRP prepared me wonderfully for life as a family medicine attending! In addition to typical doctoring skills, I learned practice management skills and ongoing self-care that enable me to be efficient yet allow me to maintain fulfillment from work. I currently practice at a safety net clinic doing full spectrum outpatient care - prenatal, medication assisted treatment of substance use disorders, newborn and pediatrics, gender-affirming care, and procedures galore!”

Class of 2019

Lisa Schamber, M.D.

“Sutter FMRP was excellent FM training and prepared me even better than I realized at the time. I went into practice knowing how to do “all the things” and started practice far ahead of many of my peers. Highly recommend!”

Class of 2019

Andy Brothers M.D.

"I feel a deep connection to this impressive and diverse group of individuals supporting each other and making the world a better place."

Core Faculty

Silen Bun, M.D.

"I rotated here as a medical student and I love the people and my experience. It felt like a family and everyone really cared about my learning and happiness. I knew that I would get the same experience as a resident, and I did!"

Class of 2018

Schuyler Wood, M.D.

"Of all the 11 programs I visited, I got a subtle sense of tremendous pride and well-being from among the residents at Sutter. That instinct served me well. I know Sutter FMRP was the best possible choice I could have made."

Class of 2017

Elizabeth Ward Pham, M.D.

"I wanted an unopposed family medicine residency program, where I would have a high level of responsibility for patient care across all medical disciplines in the context of a supportive and caring team. I graduated in 2006, and I am grateful for my excellent residency training every day."

Class of 2006 - Adjunct Faculty

Nathan Hitzeman, M.D.

“I trained here and then stayed on as faculty. It’s been a pleasure carrying on the wealth of procedural training I learned here as a resident. Now when I go home and my daughters are watching Dr. Pimple Popper, I tell them I do that stuff too. And I have one up on Dr. Lee in that I can tell whether it’s as cyst or lipoma before I go in because I can use POCUS! We got your full service Family Medicine right here.”
