Program Curriculum
The academic calendar year is divided into 13 four-week blocks. All incoming residents attend a two-week Sutter GME orientation before beginning clinical training. Rotations take place at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, and selected outpatient imaging centers near both hospitals.
Throughout each year of training, residents rotate across a wide variety of subspecialty sections. Expectations and autonomy increase progressively across training levels, building the confidence and clinical skills needed for independent practice. ACR In-Training subspecialty exams are used alongside clinical rotations to provide ongoing feedback and formative assessment of resident progress. Residents also complete a PGY-level specific ACR Diagnostic In-Training (DXIT) Exam each year.
In the second half of the first year, residents begin participating in evening and weekend STAT shift coverage. For more advanced residents, two-week night float blocks are paired with Emergency Radiology daytime blocks beginning at the end of PGY-3.
All residents complete the four-week AIRP Radiologic Pathology course virtually during PGY-4. In PGY-5, up to six months of electives are available, offering opportunities for mini-fellowships and additional time in areas of interest. The program is fully committed to providing the training and preparation needed to excel on board examinations. Residents take the ABR Diagnostic Radiology Qualifying (Core) Exam in the fall of PGY-5 and sit for the ABR Oral Certifying Exam in June, at the conclusion of their training.
