Emergency Medicine Residency

MARK PORTMAN: So I think my favorite thing about emergency
medicine is how fast-paced it is.
It's very interesting.
You never know what to expect.
LINDA HERMAN: There are very few other physicians
that are trained in everything.
And you need to be able to practice
that in the future in the ways that people
expect to receive it.
Medicine is changing.
You need to teach new skills.

LEON CLARK: Sutter Roseville Medical Center
is a 382 bed hospital located 20 miles east of Sacramento
in one of the fastest growing regions in Northern California.
We're privileged to serve 700,000 patients
across our 57-acre campus.
WILLIAM WEBSTER: A lot of unique parts of this hospital
are its large catchment areas.
Ten counties, active Life Flight,
level two trauma center.
We are currently a thrombectomy-capable stroke
center, STEMI receiving center.
MARK PORTMAN: Beyond traumatic injuries,
there is also a lot of medical pathology pertaining
to cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal pathology.
LINDA HERMAN: Anybody who trains here
will see a wide range of different cultures.
And, of course, diseases.
Pediatrics all the way to the geriatrics.
It's a new program.
You have a chance to have your input into what
the rotations should be.
WILLIAM WEBSTER: I think the residents
can be able to form a lot of this
in a new program like this.
We're going to have some people who are seasoned teachers here.
We're going to be bringing in fellowship-trained ultrasound
people, fellowship-trained SIMs people.
But we also have people who have just been practicing emergency
medicine for a number of years.
MARK PORTMAN: Residents can expect a pretty busy learning
environment in Sutter Roseville.
We see about 90,000 patients per year.
WILLIAM WEBSTER: We have an incredibly supportive
consulting staff in the emergency department.
The cardiologists and neurologists and nephrologists,
the surgeons, the orthopedists.
Our group of docs who are really top of the class
in their respective fields and are
excited about having residents.
MARK PORTMAN: Sometimes they can provide you
with just a little bit of information
to help you in terms of guidance.
And sometimes they'll come in and help you right at bedside.
LINDA HERMAN: If you're interested in health care
disparities and serving the underserved,
we have rurally-based programs that you can take electives in.
MARK PORTMAN: We're going to work hard to try and pair you
with mentors and research projects that
fit your interest.
RISHI MENON: Wellness is an extremely important part
of becoming a physician.
To be a good doctor, you have to take care of yourself.
One of the things I'm most excited about
is developing that curriculum.
WILLIAM WEBSTER: I think the vast majority
of people practice in suburban locations.
Having the unique ability to teach residents in that
is going to be an outstanding opportunity for them
to learn to practice medicine on patients that they're going
to see for their entire career.
LEON CLARK: I believe because of the size and diversity
of our integrated network, we have the ability
to provide a world class training
experience for our residents, unparalleled
in Northern California.
