Clinical Experience at East Bay

The Sutter Health East Bay PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program provides residents the opportunity to strengthen and solidify their clinical skills by providing patient care services across the continuum of care. With four required core rotations to build a strong clinical, operational, and management foundation in acute and ambulatory settings, residents will continue to pursue their pharmacy area of interest with three elective rotations. Longitudinal rotations in research, project development, teaching, and operations will garner the skills to be an astute, well-rounded, pharmaceutical healthcare provider.

Learn From Experienced Preceptors

Residents work with experienced clinical pharmacists and pharmacy leaders representing a broad range of specialties across the East Bay region. Preceptors provide individualized mentorship, regular feedback, and progressive responsibility while supporting residents' professional and career development.
Our preceptors include residency-trained pharmacists with expertise in acute care, ambulatory care, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, internal medicine, medication safety, oncology, pharmacy administration, psychiatry, specialty pharmacy, and transitions of care.

Research & Practice Advancement

Residents complete a longitudinal research project focused on improving patient care and clinical outcomes. Working alongside project preceptors, subject matter experts, and data analysts, residents gain experience in study design, Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission and approval, project implementation, data analysis, manuscript development, and scholarly presentation. Residents present their research at the Western States Conference and develop a manuscript suitable for publication. In addition, residents complete a medication use evaluation (MUE) or quality improvement project and present their findings at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.
