Volunteering at California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco

California Pacific Medical Center offers a wide array of volunteer opportunities at various locations on weekdays, weekends and evenings. We especially need help during the day on weekdays.

Here are some of the opportunities available at CPMC:

Patient Services

Create a warm and supportive atmosphere for patients and their families and assist therapists and staff with creative activities.

  • Ambulatory Surgery Unit — Work in a busy clinical unit by assisting nurses preparing patients for surgery and post-surgery discharge (all campuses)
  • Cancer Patient Liaison — Play a supportive role by providing care to patients who are very ill, and also support to their families. (Van Ness, Davies, Mission Bernal campuses)
  • Coming Home Hospice Residence/Palliative Care — Play a supportive role by providing care to patients and families at the end of life. (Van Ness, Davies, Mission Bernal campuses)
  • Dietary Department — Have meaningful one-on-one interaction with patients through helping with menu selections. Provide support to nutritional staff. (Van Ness, Davies and Mission Bernal Campuses)
  • Elder Care Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) — seeks to decrease confusion and subsequent loss of independence in older patients in an acute care setting.
  • Emergency Department — Be part of the exciting ED team by assisting staff with non-clinical duties in the waiting room and patient treatment area. Tasks include making gurneys, restocking supply carts, comforting families and providing patient advocacy. (Van Ness, Davies, and Mission Bernal campuses)
  • Novack Child Life Services — Child Life Specialists are trained child development professionals who work with children and families to help them cope with the potential stressors associated with their hospitalization and illness.
  • Nuclear Medicine — Learn about cutting-edge medical imaging technology through greeting and escorting patients and assisting with film management. Assist technologists and physicians during tests. (Pacific Heights Outpatient Campus)
  • Nursing Units — Help clinical staff and patients with non-medical needs such as visiting, reading, creating charts, running errands, writing letters. Skilled Nursing, Maternity, Cardiac Intensive Care, Intensive Care Unit, Medical Surgical Unit, Pediatrics, etc. (all campuses)
  • Radiology — Learn about cutting-edge medical imaging technology through greeting and escorting patients and assisting them with film management. Assist technologists and staff with administrative tasks for tests. (all campuses)
  • Recreational Therapy — Interact with patients through fun and creative projects. Assist recreational therapists with art projects, reading, music, games and other activities for patients of the skilled nursing units, medical/surgical units, and inpatient rehabilitation unit. (Van Ness, Davies and Mission Bernal campuses)
  • Rehabilitation Therapy — Learn about rehabilitation by observing patients undergoing physical and occupational therapy. (Van Ness, Davies and Mission Bernal campuses)
  • Soothing Sounds — Volunteers share their musical talent to foster a soothing and calming environment for patients, family and staff. (Van Ness, Davies, and Mission Bernal campuses)
  • Eucharistic Ministers

Hospitality

Create a warm and hospitable environment for our visitors.

  • Breast Health Center — Welcome and help patients feel at ease. Escort patients and help them prepare for their procedures. (Pacific Heights Outpatient Campus)
  • Emergency Department — Greet people entering the ED, give helpful information and oversee waiting room area.  (Van Ness, Davies, and Mission Bernal campuses)
  • Hospice Receptionist/Kitchen Helper/Visit with Patients — Meet and greet family members and answer phones, or work in the kitchen and assist staff with food preparation and clean up. Spend time with patients. (Coming Home Hospice)
  • Hospitality Escort — Personally escort patients and family members to various areas of the hospital. (all campuses)
  • Information Desk — Direct patients and visitors to locations throughout medical center. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, patience and acceptance of diversity are required. (all campuses)
  • Liver Transplant Escort — Make a meaningful difference by giving a hospital tour and sharing important information about the medical center to new prospective transplant patients and family members. Early morning shift only. (Van Ness Campus)
  • NICU – Baby Cuddler program – Van Ness Campus
  • Ambulatory Care Unit — Serve as an important liaison between surgery and waiting families. (Van Ness, Mission Bernal, and Pacific Heights Outpatient Campuses)
  • Wig Salon – Pacific Heights Outpatient Campus
  • Women's Health Resource Center — Teach internet skills to women over age 60, or assist women undergoing cancer treatment with manicures and beauty “makeovers.” (Pacific Heights Outpatient Campus)

Administrative and Clerical

Provide important administrative support to the hospital while learning valuable skills. A variety of departments and offices offer diverse tasks ranging from mailing and filing projects to complex computer data entry. (all campuses)

Knitting and Crocheting Projects

Do you love to knit or crochet? Volunteers are needed to knit or crochet baby caps and blankets for newborns and children for CPMC's Van Ness Campus and Mission Bernal Campus. All skill levels welcome!
