Question
I am 40 and I get cramps so severe in my toes that they stiffen up in different directions. What could be the cause of this and should I be concerned?
Answer
I am so sorry to hear that you are suffering from this painful, but common, condition. There are many possible causes of foot cramps.
Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially if exercising, as dehydration can lead to muscle cramps.
Nutritional supplementation with potassium, magnesium, and calcium can be helpful as well, since deficiencies of these vitamins and minerals make cramps more likely.
For relief, trying warming up your feet with a foot bath and stretching with your toes toward your nose, not pointed down. If the foot cramps don't let up, visit your podiatrist for a comprehensive foot examination to rule out problems with the circulation or the nerves of your feet.
