Smoothies: Are they healthy?

Deborah Kurzrock

Deborah Kurzrock, R.D.

Mills-Peninsula Medical Center

Question:

Are commercial smoothies healthy?

Answer:

Smoothies can be a healthy way to get some of your recommended servings of fruits and vegetables for the day. It really depends on what type of smoothie you order or buy.

Most smoothies from the market or a smoothie establishment are high in calories and sugar content. It is important to read the nutrition information label. There are usually two servings per 16 oz. container, which can be high in calories if you drink the whole container.

When choosing a smoothie, select fruit- and veggie-only type recipes. A lot of the smoothies contain frozen yogurt or sherbet and sometimes even contain chocolate! Check out the lower calorie options, if available.

Also remember that the size of the smoothie can make a big difference in what you are consuming. Be sure to order the smallest size available or share with a friend!
