The next step in your career starts here. The CPMC Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Child, Adolescent and Family Psychology provides high-quality training for the next generation of youth and family psychologists. This 12-month program focuses on therapy, assessment, consultation and leadership skills.

Our clinical psychology faculty offers apprenticeship-style training as well as supervision, case conferencing and a year-long advanced seminar. As a fellow, you’ll gain experience serving youth and families in our clinics. You can also take on assignments in the hospital as community consultants and in partner primary care pediatric clinics as behavioral health clinicians. By the end of the training year, fellows are eligible for their license and prepared to work in hospital-based and outpatient clinic settings.

Supervision Philosophy

Get guidance through every step of your fellowship. As a fellow, you'll receive 2 hours of individual face to face supervision per week and two hours of in person group supervision. As a fellow, you’ll receive a combination of individual and group supervision. Training coordinators or other staff psychologists provide individual supervision, while psychologists in the area of your sub-rotation will provide secondary supervision. You’ll also be exposed to practice styles from a variety of psychologists across the department, including the group supervisor, case consultation facilitator and instructors. Our approach to supervision is designed to grow your skills and prepare you for the California Board of Psychology post-doctoral training requirements.

At the start of the training year, fellows complete a self-assessment using our Fellow Evaluation Form (FEF), a comprehensive, competency-based evaluation that assesses a broad range of professional and clinical competencies. These competencies are related to our general training goals and objectives, but an individualized training plan is developed for each fellow through a collaborative process with his/her supervisors. Formal evaluations are completed at the mid-year and end-of-year using the FEF.  Fellows must remain in good standing to successfully complete the training program (i.e., no ratings of “1” or “Rarely meets practice standards” on FEF completed by primary supervisor). If a fellow is not in good standing, a remediation plan will be developed and every effort will be made to support the fellow and address any performance deficiencies. The details of fellow’s rights and our Due Process and Grievance Policies are contained in our training manual, which is provided during the orientation process.

Program Completion Requirements

Fellows are asked to complete formal self-assessments and program evaluations at the middle and end of the year. Your supervisor is also available to provide feedback, support your development and be a resource throughout your time in the program.

About CPMC

CPMC is one of the largest private, not-for-profit, academic medical centers in California. Our doctors and hospitals serve more than 100 communities in Northern California, including the San Francisco Bay Area. CPMC’s mission is to serve the community by providing high-quality, cost-effective healthcare services in a compassionate and respectful environment that is supported and stimulated by education and research.

CPMC’s vision is to be a leader in the transformation of healthcare and to achieve the highest levels of quality, access and affordability. Our core values include excellence and quality in the delivery of services to patients, innovation in providing care to patients, affordability of care, teamwork and integrity.

CPMC is committed to high-quality advanced education. As a private, multi-campus tertiary teaching hospital, CPMC offers a unique and rewarding educational experience through several medical and psychology education programs. Each year, the Department of Psychiatry, led by Chairman Alan Newman, M.D., supports dozens of psychiatry residents, psychology interns and fellows, and medical students. This helps further the hospital’s mission of educating the next generation of health professionals. As a Department of Pediatrics program, we’re also under the direction of Claudia Mueller, M.D., Ph.D. Our department clinical director is Suzanne Giraudo, Ed.D.

CPMC’s mission is to meet the healthcare needs of all of our community members. Our community-based approach to care allows us to provide access to those who cannot afford healthcare and support programs for those in financial need. The fellowship program is supported by a combination of hospital funds and philanthropy. This allows us to increase access to psychological services through the adding and training of several clinician fellows each year.
