Evaluation of Competencies
The evaluation of a postdoctoral fellow’s progress and the postdoctoral fellow’s evaluation of the program are an integral part of the overall training experience. Fellows are involved in the development of their specific training activities and assignments. Near the beginning of the training experience there will be discussion of core and specialized competencies. More formal review occurs at approximately 6-months, 12-months, 18-months, and near the 24-month mark.
These review forms will be provided at the appropriate times and include:
- A self-review of core and specialty skills
- A supervisor-review of trainee core and specialty skills
If areas of weakness are present, they are discussed with the fellow, and a step-by-step remediation plan is developed. If necessary, a probationary period may be established, after which progress in the program will be formally evaluated every two months.
Due process ensures that the training program's decisions about fellows are neither arbitrary nor personally based. Specific evaluative procedures apply to all fellows and appeal procedures are available for fellows who wish to challenge the program's actions.
