Critical Care for Stroke

Many people think of stroke as involving the brain, but actually strokes have just as much to do with the heart and vascular system. Any interruption to the blood flow through the arteries caused by a blockage, blood clot or hemorrhage can cause the brain to temporarily or permanently lose oxygen, destroying brain cells. This is called cerebrovascular disease, a broad category that includes stroke as well as carotid stenosis, vertebral and intracranial stenosis, aneurysms, and vascular malformations.

We offer comprehensive care for stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases. This starts with prevention efforts to reduce your risk factors and extends through emergency care and recovery services to lessen stroke impact.

CPMC is a certified Comprehensive Stroke Care Center, providing advanced, emergency stroke diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Our center has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines Gold Plus Award for consistently following national stroke treatment guidelines. We’ve also exceeded national benchmarks for stroke treatment with thrombolysis (tPA) treatment rates far surpassing national averages. Learn more about our stroke care outcomes, including tPA administration and stroke education statistics.

CPMC also offers:

  • An award-winning Telestroke Program that serves smaller and more rural hospitals. Telestroke uses video teleconferencing to connect local doctors with our leading stroke care specialists. The program also facilitates fast transport for patients who need services that are not available locally.
  • Advanced inpatient stroke rehabilitation at our CARF-accredited California Pacific Regional Rehabilitation Center and outpatient stroke rehabilitation services. Our team assists patients from acute treatment through recovery, helping them return to their highest level of function.
  • Community stroke education and screening programs to stop strokes before they occur.
