    Excellent Transplant Outcomes

Since opening in 1988, Sutter’s Liver Disease and Transplant Center at California Pacific Medical Center has performed more than 2,100 liver transplants. We see patients at CPMC in San Francisco in addition to outreach clinics across Sutter’s network in Northern California and Reno.

Data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) demonstrate that our program outcomes are among the nation’s best. In the last SRTR reporting period ending January 2018, one-year and three-year patient survival rates at CPMC were 95 percent and 87 percent respectively, both statistically better outcomes than expected (adjusted for illness severity at transplantation). This pattern of excellence has been evident for the past six years, according to SRTR.

Three-year liver transplantation survival rate for patients with primary liver cancer is 93 percent, compared with 85 percent in Region 5 (Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah) and 84 percent nationally. These remarkable outcomes reflect an ongoing commitment to and relentless focus on providing the highest quality of liver and liver transplant care at CPMC.

Our outcomes reflect the excellence and commitment of our transplant teams, who are at the forefront of clinical research and surgical innovation.

Our medical staff provides the personal care and support you need, walking you through each stage of liver disease management and transplantation.

    Liver Transplant Evaluation

Candidates for liver transplant undergo a comprehensive two-to-three-day liver transplant evaluation that will determine if a transplant is needed and feasible through blood work, imaging studies and heart tests.

    Liver Transplant Surgery

Liver transplant surgery is performed at California Pacific Medical Center, where transplant care teams work with precision and the utmost attention to quality and detail.

    Post Liver Transplant Care

    Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) Research

Sutter Health Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) Research
Hepatology researchers are investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying hepatitis B, C and other liver diseases. Identifying early molecular or genetic changes - which may be detected before the disease manifests any clinical symptoms - could lead to interventions that reduce the severity of liver disease, or even prevent it from developing. Clinical researchers in the Liver Disease Management and Transplant Program are leading new investigations into hepatitis B and C disease management, hepatoma, hepatitis and HIV co-infection, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, hepatorenal syndrome, and the care of liver transplant patients.
