Neuropsychology for Epilepsy

Neuropsychology focuses on thinking, learning and behavior and how it relates to the brain. With evaluations and tests, neuropsychologists can figure out the strength of your memory and thinking skills.

For people who have or may have epilepsy, neuropsychologists use standardized paper-and-pencil tests to determine memory, cognition and emotional function. The results can help to create an epilepsy diagnosis or treatment plan.

You may receive a referral to a neuropsychologist if you notice issues with:

  • Learning
  • Memory
  • Focus
  • Word finding
  • Expressing yourself
  • Finishing projects
  • Controlling behavior

Epileptic Seizures and Neuropsychological Problems

People with epilepsy not controlled with medication often experience problems with their memory and other thinking skills. Difficulties with various thinking skills can occur depending on a number of factors, such as:

  • Type and location of seizures
  • Frequency of seizures
  • Duration of seizures
  • Medication use

Each of these factors will help your neuropsychologist and epileptologist understand your seizures and how they may affect you.

When you have a seizure, it’s important to write down notes for your care team. These notes will help you and your care team determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Reduce Your Risk of Cognitive Dysfunction

If you’re living with epilepsy, it’s important to discuss your condition with your doctor or epileptologist. If issues continue, your doctor may be able to order additional diagnostic testing, such as blood work, EEGs or brain imaging.

There are a number of ways you can reduce your risk of cognitive dysfunction in everyday life, such as:

  • Managing your seizures
  • Taking medications as prescribed
  • Reporting any side effects or problems to your doctor
  • Maintaining a seizure diary
  • Refraining from alcohol and drug abuse
  • Getting plenty of sleep
  • Exercising consistently and safely

Speak with your doctor if you would like a referral to a neuropsychologist for an assessment.
