Question:

I'm a frequent sufferer of migraines. Does this mean that I'm at a higher risk of stroke?

Answer:

There is some evidence showing an increased risk of stroke associated with having migraine with aura. Specifically, women who have migraines with auras are at an increased risk for stroke.

Smoking, oral contraceptive use, and age (less than 45 years old) may provide added risk in these women. However it is important to note that the overall risk of stroke in migraine sufferers is quite low and the absolute risk of stroke in women who have migraine with aura is also small. It is recommended that you confer with your primary care doctor or neurologist with regards to your risk of stroke and ideas for stroke prevention.
