JASIP SINGH: This whole area of Central Valley
is very community focused.
It still has that small town vibe,
even though it's growing as a city.
RAELEIGH PAYANES: I actually came to the Central Valley
for residency and I immediately fell in love
with the small town feel with lots of opportunities
for the arts, good food.
It's a great place to raise a family.
PRIYA KISHORE: Whenever I get a weekend off,
I definitely love driving to San Francisco.
It's pretty easy to go to Yosemite as well.
That was a big bonus for me coming
to this residency program.
DAVID A. HILBURN: We like the fact
that we're involved in patients' lives.
If you want to be a physician in a small community,
that's what we can offer that no one else can offer.
RAELEIGH PAYANES: There she is.
That's right there, yeah.
In the Central Valley, patients have
very complex medical conditions, but they're also
complex socially.
It's a great opportunity for us to think
about social determinants of health
and how the different things in our communities
really impact our health.
PRIYA KISHORE: Dr. Payanes has made it a point
to establish that this is a program that's
focused on caring for the community,
and that's something I'm very passionate about.
JASIP SINGH: We are a very close-knit group.
We usually hang out together outside the clinic.
And it's a family rather than just like co-residents.
I'm proud that we created that culture here.

DAVID A. HILBURN: This is the Patterson Satellite
Clinic of Sutter Gould.
We have a surgery unit here.
The family doctor is basically the foundation
of medical knowledge in town.
Out here, we have the benefits of being a part of a large
group, which is what Sutter Gould is,
some 470-odd physicians.
But you can also be in a small town,
and that's something that I really enjoy.

RAELEIGH PAYANES: This program is definitely
in a phase of growth.
We are continuously finding new opportunities
for really exciting learning and incorporating new technology.
ABDUL MUREED ALIM: Residents will be part of a bigger
picture, not only clinical training but also AI-initiative,
a state-of-the-art sim lab.
PRIYA KISHORE: We have all of these resources.
Everything's newly set up for us.
Being that Sutter is a large health care system,
it provides multiple opportunities
for career advancement.
JASIP SINGH: The Central Valley opens up
a lot of doors of learning.
It's an amazing place to grow your skills.
And those skills will help you serve any population in the US.
