Philosophy of Care
I am a California-licensed and board-certified general surgeon, and am fellowship trained in advanced laparoscopic (minimally invasive) and bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. As a surgeon, I believe in a commitment to constant self-evaluation and improvement, with the goal of bettering the medical welfare of others. I take pride in keeping abreast of up-to-date scientific literature and the newest technological advancements in order to deliver the best evidence-based medicine possible.
One of my main goals as a surgeon is to create a partnership with my patients, placing an emphasis on teamwork. I make every effort to translate medical information to my patients in a down-to-earth and understandable manner in order to provide them with the necessary tools to make an informed decision about their treatment plan. Even before surgery, I strive to help my patients feel at ease in order to develop the best positive mental attitude, as I believe that realism complemented by optimism translates into better outcomes.
I believe that surgery is an art and a science. As an undergraduate student, I studied English literature, along biological sciences. I then completed master's degrees in biomedical science and applied physiology. After medical school, I completed my general surgery residency training at Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons Harlem Hospital Center. Training at a level-1 trauma center in an underserved community afforded me the invaluable opportunity to hone my clinical skills in an environment with otherwise limited resources.
Under the leadership of Dr. Lawrence Way and other renowned surgeons, I completed my specialty fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco. It is extremely rewarding to be able to skillfully practice the art of minimally invasive surgery. More importantly, however, the benefits to the patient are clear: less pain, smaller scars, quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay. For weight-loss surgery patients, a multidisciplinary approach is taken to ensure targeted and sustainable weight loss after surgery. I offer multiple surgical options for weight loss tailored individually to patients including, the lap adjustable gastric band, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
I understand that the steadiest of hands and the sharpest of minds do not alone define a surgeon. I believe it is important to be able to relate to each patient on a tangible level and therefore I do my best to understand their personal backgrounds. On a personal note, I enjoy painting, short-story writing, musical composition, sports and spending time with my family and friends. Overall, I believe my creative interests greatly complement my professional life as a Surgeon and I look forward taking part in your care.
