From instructions for medications, to duration of illnesses, and follow up visits, all information must be communicated in a way to allow the patient and guardian(s) to understand the rationale of the situation. From there, a plan must be formed -- ranging anywhere from watchful observation at home to hospitalization with numerous medical therapies. As long as a plan of care is communicated and understood, including follow-up, there can be reassurance that the needs of the doctor, patient and family are met.
