Breastfeeding FAQs

  • Learn as much as you can by reading trusted sources, taking prenatal breastfeeding classes, and finding a breastfeeding support group in your area.

  • Nipple soreness is common, especially during the first few days of breastfeeding. This usually gets better after a few days. Some mothers feel discomfort when their baby first latches. You can expect to feel a gentle tug on your breast during feeding but nursing shouldn’t hurt. Pain may indicate the baby isn’t latching correctly. Talk to your doctor or a lactation consultant if you experience pain while breastfeeding.

  • Pacifiers have been shown to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), but should not be introduced until latch, breastfeeding and milk supply have been well established (around 6 weeks).

  • The CDC recommends that breastfeeding mothers take a multivitamin every day, such as your prenatal vitamin.

  • Breastmilk supply depends on demand. Breastfeed your baby whenever they’re hungry. Your milk supply should match the size of baby’s stomach, which will continue to grow as they do. Frequent feeding – eight or more times per day for newborns – helps your body build a good supply.
