    Preventive Care for Prediabetes

When your doctor says you have prediabetes, you may not know what it means — but in fact, a high blood sugar level greatly increases your risk for developing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Fortunately, losing weight and getting regular exercise can turn that diagnosis around.

At PAMF, we offer Type 2 diabetes prevention programs for kids, teens and adults, as well as weight management classes, events and support groups. Our special programs can help you lose weight, improve your diet and reduce your disease risk. Here are some of the options:

    • Diabetes Prevention Programs — Our year-long diabetes prevention programs are based on the Group Lifestyle Balance Programs, developed by the University of Pittsburgh and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These programs adapt the curriculum based on a national study of people with prediabetes, which found that those who lost a modest amount of weight through healthy eating and exercise reduced their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. This program is offered at several convenient PAMF locations.
    • Weight Management Programs — We’ll help you set goals, achieve measurable weight loss and improve overall health.
    • Diabetes Classes — Get the up-to-date information you need to know about Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.

Sutter Health Diabetes, Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome Research
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of illness and death in the U.S. today, but it was uncommon just 60 years ago. Research is critical to slow down this growing health problem and treat the 29 million Americans who have it. Diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t make or use the hormone insulin properly. Cells don’t get the energy they need, and sugar from food – called glucose – builds up in the blood. Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes and is epidemic in this country.
