Afshin Ghayoumi, M.D.

I love to fix things, from a broken clock to a broken heart. I think this very desire was the main motivation for me to go to medical school and become a doctor. After all, the most fascinating and challenging machine is the human body.

As a doctor, I chose to go into family practice because I like to know about everything, and family practice offers that opportunity. In particular, adult medicine is my favorite.  I enjoy all aspects of adult medicine. However, my special interests include cardiology, sports medicine, sports physiology and research. I completed one year of research in exercise testing and heart failure at Stanford University Medical Center.

I grew up in Tehran, Iran and received my medical degree from the Iran University of Medical Science. Both my internship and residency took place at Mercy Medical Center in Merced, California. Prior to joining PAMF, I was a physician with Kaiser Permanente.

I am fluent in Persian (Farsi). I also know some Turkish. My hobbies are soccer, yoga, music, the Internet and computers. I play soccer in an 'over-35 league' in San Jose. I practice yoga and I am looking for a good tai chi class. I also play a traditional Persian musical instrument called the Setar.

I believe there is only a patient, not a disease -- because each disease may have different manifestations in different people. Therefore, I believe in a holistic approach -- whatever it takes to fix the problem. From curanderos to acupuncture in China, if it works for you and it is safe, I am all for it.
